A piece by LJY-Netzer member Dan Squire
LJY-Netzer is a movement that holds the Jewish value of tikkun olam (repairing the world) as one of its central pillars. On December 22nd 2014 we affirmed our movement’s commitment to evaluating and minimising our use of fossil fuels, lobbying for fossil fuel divestment, and affiliating with the Oil Vay campaign.
A Jewish climate change campaign like Oil Vay is overdue and LJY-Netzer are excited that we are the first group to officially support it. We believe that Jews have a moral and religious duty to divest from fossil fuels, both to preserve the environment for future generations and to promote sustainable ways of living.
This is an issue that is important to us as young people, but should be important to everyone regardless of age. We hope that we will soon be joined by other youth movements in our pledge to divest from fossil fuels, and that the UK Jewish population can set an example in its commitment to tikkun olam.
